Toolkit & Practice Library

The Kindness Toolkit

A practical method for turning the Charter into daily practice. It helps any hospital identify vulnerable moments, ease avoidable friction, support staff, improve communication, and make kindness visible in everyday operations.

The full Toolkit and templates are available to verified signatories. A preview is open to everyone.

About the Toolkit

What the Toolkit is

The Kindness Toolkit helps institutions identify moments where patients, families, caregivers and staff experience anxiety, delay, confusion or distress, and introduce small, practical changes that make care feel more humane, clear and reassuring. It provides a practical method for making humane care part of daily operations.

How to begin

Our rollout philosophy

The Toolkit is designed for practical, supportive adoption. Institutions can begin with small changes, learn from frontline experience, and scale what works.

01

Start small, then scale

Begin with selected pilot departments or units, then expand more widely.

02

Focus on real pain points

Choose moments where patients, families, caregivers or staff often feel vulnerable.

03

Involve frontline teams

Doctors, nurses, front office, billing, housekeeping, security, patient relations and support staff help identify problems and solutions.

04

Keep it supportive

Approach the work as culture-building and process improvement, carried out in a supportive spirit.

05

Make kindness visible

Stories, appreciation, leadership rounds and simple rituals make kindness part of daily institutional identity.

Example

"This family has been waiting anxiously."

2

Acknowledge

What it means

Name the difficulty respectfully

Example

"I understand this wait is stressful."

3

Explain

What it means

Give clear, simple information

Example

"The doctor is attending an emergency case."

4

Act

What it means

Do one practical thing

Example

Offer water, seating, an update, escalation or privacy.

5

Close the loop

What it means

Confirm the next step

Example

"I will come back in 15 minutes with an update."
